Chasen Galleries is very proud to present :
Contemporary Cuban Art Show
AUGUST 11 – 22
Isolation and art do not go well together. Through political and economic restraints, Cuban Art, in all its diversity, has grasped the current opportunity to express the passions and frustrations of life in Cuba. Nurtured by a historical artistic tradition, going back to the 19th century, Cuban governments, past and present, have placed an emphasis on maintaining a high quality in the visual arts.
Today, we are presenting six of the finer artists to mature from this milieu. If it be the influence of Wilfredo Lamm on current modernist Jose Bruzon, the mixture of race, folklore and religious syncretism in the paintings of Ivan Basso, or the social criticism immersed in the satirical comedy of Yasiel Cardenas, the work of these, and the other artists, presented in this exhibition, arrive in the US for the first time.
OPENING : Thursday, August 11th, from 6 – 8 pm
The Washington Society of Landscape Painters
OCTOBER 7 – 28
The artists of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters (WSLP) stand on a long, well-documented history. Founded in 1913 after a chance encounter between two plein air painters in Washington DC’s Rock Creek Park, the WSLP has grown, prospered, and weathered over a century of tumultuous changes in the art world. Its archives reside in the Smithsonian Institution and the society today is an active and vibrant group of 40 juried, professional painters who delight in both the beauty of the landscape and in the camaraderie of their shared passion.
Join us for an unprecedented exhibition, in which we will showcase the work of 30 artist members of the WSLP, almost all of whom have never shown at Chasen Galleries (or anywhere else in Richmond) before! This will be a very unique opportunity to get a first look at many brand new works by talented artists who might not otherwise have come across your vision!
OPENING : Friday, October 7th, from 6 – 8 pm
